Modern Dating Etiquette

Posted on 5:16 AM by jackline

A date is a minefield of potential gaffes.
The rules of dating and relationships have changed dramatically since the times when men paid for everything and women schemed to "grab a husband," if in fact those times ever existed. Many specific actions or customs are open to question and dependent on context, but basic attitudes of honesty and respect are as essential as ever.

1.
Context

o    All issues of etiquette are dependent on context. How you are going to behave on a date will depend on how well you know the other person, how formal the activity is, your age and your date's age, and many other factors. Take advice and expectations into account, but always be aware of the context and how it is affecting your date's expectations. Don't be afraid to take risks and break rules, as long as your motivations are as much for your partner's enjoyment as your own.

Appearance

o    Particularly for a first date, appearance is incredibly important. Try to strike that tricky balance where you look your best without appearing like you're trying too hard. Unless you are going to a wedding or other formal event, you aren't expected to be decked out in an expensive outfit. For casual events, both men and women can look just as good in jeans and a decent sweater. Try to adjust your look to your date. If you know your date is quite reserved and you want to make a good impression, you might consider taking out the nose ring and leaving spiked collar at home for the evening.

Punctuality

o    Contrary to the themes of many movies in which the potential boyfriend is stranded with dad in the living room while the girl primps upstairs for an hour, it is never good form to keep someone waiting, whether you are a man or a woman. Ten minutes is not a disaster, but the closer you get to half an hour the more likely you are to be starting off wrong with your date. If you know you are going to be late, definitely contact your date at the first opportunity and let her know. Particularly if you both have cell phones, there is no way to justify standing someone up.

Money Issues

o    The question of payment on dates is awkward for many people. Traditionally, the man always would pay, but many women today find this tradition condescending. A good rule of thumb is that if you were the initiator of the date, expect to pay the price. Again, context is critical. You need to read the expectations of your date, without necessarily asking outright. Sensitivity to your date's tone of voice, body language and subtle hints can teach you a lot. When in doubt, always err on the side of paying. Better to be seen as excessively generous than as a cheapskate.

Awkward Doorstep Moments

o    To kiss or not to kiss? If you have been dating for a while, this probably isn't an issue, but the end of the first date is often stressful. Yet again, you must read your date, and it isn't all that hard to do in this situation. If there is no chemistry or spark there, a simple handshake or brief kiss on the cheek is fine. If the fireworks are going off, do what comes naturally
